Important notice for Confluence administrators who have one of the SQL for Confluence add-ons.

There was a significant change in configuration values between Tomcat 7 (before Confluence 5.8) and Tomcat 8 (after Confluence 5.8). Confluence administrators should review their server.xml configuration and make adjustments.

Max ConnectionsDefault Max ConnectionsWait Time for Connection from PoolDefault Wait Time for Connection from PoolExample Settings
Tomcat 8maxTotal8maxWaitMillis (in milliseconds)-1 (no limit)
  • maxTotal="25"
  • maxWaitMillis="10000"
Tomcat 7maxActive-1 (no limit)maxWait (in seconds)30 (seconds)
  • maxActive="25"

Why Is This Important?

Some customers have reported slow pages and related problems after upgrading Confluence. This is a likely consequence of running out of connections and having to wait for a connection to become available. The new default of 8 is very low for many higher volume use cases. This is exacerbated by a no limit wait which provides no feedback to page viewer that there is contention. By reviewing your previous configuration and updating it to use the new parameters, it should restore previous behavior.

Highlights

Improvements

  1. Numerical formatting of total column via customized column types.
  2. Support for setting Oracle session attributes and similar.
  3. Transaction isolation parameter will now default to a globally configured value allowing the administrator to set a site wide default. Macro parameters can still override the default value. The global default is the same (READ_COMMITTED) as the former macro default, so it is upward compatible with existing usage. Administrators should be careful changing the default as it will apply to all existing macros that have not specifically overridden the existing default. For instance, macros that still need READ_COMMITTED after the global default is changed to something else, will need to be changed to select the specific READ_COMMITTED value.
  4. Updated component libraries.

Highlights

New macro

A new macro called sql-file is provided to enable user scenarios related to macro-security. It only allows accessing specifically authorized scripts stored on the Confluence server file system. This provides more flexibility for administrators to selectively grant general access to the results of specific SQL scripts on pages without edit restrictions or with less restrictive edit restrictions. This is accomplished using standard Macro Security for Confluence parameter control configurations.

Macro security configuration example

The following allows the authorized.sql script located in the <confluence home>/script directory to be run from any page against any data source. No other SQL scripts can be run.

Example
sql-file=*ANY
sql-file.datasource.*=*ANY
sql-file.file.authorized.sql=*ANY

Date sorting improvements

  1. A new date sorting option - column type M
  2. Advanced date sorting bundled with add-on eliminating need for server install
  3. International language support

See Advanced Date Sorting for more details.
